2019 Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition
Our annual Piccolo Spoleto juried art exhibition highlights the recent work of artists across South Carolina in mediums of painting, sculpture, drawing, collage, printmaking, and photography. Artworks receiving prizes are presented alongside a limited selection of pieces identified by the juror as meriting display. This year’s juror is textile artist Arianne King Comer.
Arianne King Comer, Juror, 2019 Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition
A BFA graduate of Howard University, Arianne King Comer works as art consultant, indigo and community arts advocate, lecturer, and teacher in addition to her art practice. She has been an Artist in Residence in the state of South Carolina since 1995. In 1992, Arianne received the UN/USIS grant to study under renowned Batik artist Nike Olyani Davis in Oshogbo Nigeria, where her passion for indigo manifested. She was given the Yoruba name of Osun Ronke.
In 1999 Arianne was featured in the PBS documentary, “Messengers of the Spirit,” and in 2003 was featured in an indigo art segment on HGTV’s “Country Style,” which is still in syndication. In 2004, Arianne traveled to Istanbul, Turkey as a guest artist sponsored by her daughter, designer and stylist Nicole King Burroughs, where she created a custom design for Mavi Jeans.
In 2007, Arianne had the opportunity to join the Charleston Rhizome Collective in conducting a batik and indigo textile workshop at the World Social Forum in Nairobi, Kenya. From 2006 to 2007, she was artist in Residence for the North Charleston Cultural Affairs Office.
In 2012, Arianne had two solo exhibitions: “My Spirit Speaks” at the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, Alabama and “Voices from the Water” at Dalton Gallery in Rock Hill, SC. In 2013, Arianne was featured in Charleston Magazine’s “Giving Back to the Community” segment in the May issue. In the fall of that year, Charleston’s MOJA Arts Festival honored for her with an award for her service as an artist.
Arianne is currently developing workshops to take place in Port Antonio, Jamaica and has been featured in several recent group exhibitions at City Gallery, including “African Diaspora: Convergence and Reclamation” in 2014 and “A Dialogue in Black and White” in 2018. An active member of the Charleston Rhizome Collective and a designer for Seeking Indigo, Arianne regularly exhibits her work at the locally, nationally, and statewide.
